Eggnog

Eggnog is not the best Xmas drink to choose if you want to keep calories low!

Eggnog is a rich gloopy alcoholic drink made with eggs.

Delicious but unfortunately high in fat and heavy on sugar.

If you concoct this festive drink yourself you can use diet lemonade as a mixer.

Most of the ready made eggnog drinks contain non-diet lemonade as the mixer. At least this helps cut back on the sugar a little!

Cocktails

Cocktails can high calories but it depends very much on what you choose. If mixing yourself add in shots of vodka or gin as these are low calorie spirits and add diet soda mixers. You can also use pureed fresh fruit.

The calories will add up if oyu start using sugary cordials with sweet liqueurs.

Liqueurs

Liqueurs are perfectly suited to Christmas. Warming and with deep flavours evocative of snow and warm fires. Liqueurs can actually be a good choice if you are being calorie conscious. You only need a shot taken neat t get the full flavour. Most liqueurs will set you back 50 to 100 calories per shot. If you are into ginger try Kurt’s Ginger Liqueur.

Grand Marnier is a deep orange brandy liqueur delicious on it’s own. Another orange liqueur is COINTREAU Orange Liqueur with is rather more orangey than the aforementioned. Tia Maria is not as alcoholic as the previous drinks but is good with diet coke or in a coffee. Bailey’s irish cream however is higher is calories. Kurt’s Ginger Liqueur is well suited to the festivities at Xmas. If you want something really special try GOLDSCHLAGER Cinnamon Schnapps which has a gorgeous cinnamon flavour and has real gold flakes floating in it!

Mulled Wine

Some wines are low in calories. Dry white is the best option for a low calorie alcoholic wine drink. Especially mixed with low calorie soda.

At the other end of the scale are heavy red sweet wines. These are much higher in calories. Intimately this is the type of wine used in mulled wine beverages.

Although a great festive alcoholic treat drink in moderation if you are trying to keep your calorie count low!

Hot Whiskey Chocolate

Hot chocolate is a delicious drink for the winter season. Add a splash of whiskey and this drink get you in the Christmas spirit nicely.

Prepare a healthy version with skimmed milk, low fat cocoa powder and an artificial sweetener such as Stevia or Truvia

Alternatively use a sachet of ready made low calorie hot chocolate.

Irish Coffee

Christmas Drinks
Irish coffee in a black coffee with added liqueur and topped with floating cream. Well suited in the Christmas season this drink can be made with any liqueur and is popular with Grand MarnierTia Maria, Bailey’s irish cream, brandy or whiskey. Kurt’s Ginger Liqueur is a perfect festive flavour to spice up an irish coffee.

Traditionally the name irish coffee denotes the drink made with whiskey.

Sugar is usually added as well to sweeten the coffee.

A low calorie irish coffee can be made with black coffee, no sugar added with a liqueur of choice the best low calorie liqueurs would be something like brandy or whiskey. Rather than topping with full fat cream add a squirt of low fat squirty cream instead!
