The Grapefruit diet is also known as the Hollywood Diet and erroneously as the Mayo Clinic Diet. The Grapefruit diet plan is a short-term fad diet from the United States dating back to the 1930s but gaining popularity in the 1970s.

The diet plan is based on the premise that grapefruit has a fat-burning enzyme. There are variations of the grapefruit diet that are considered too low in calories (below 1200 calories a day), carbs or essential micronutrients and are seen as unhealthy and potentially dangerous. Potentially it’s use is for a short term method of weight loss only.

The grapefruit diet lasts for 10 to 12 days followed by 2 days off.

Grapefruit Diet Menu

A grapefruit diet menu is restrictive. Carbohydrates are restricted and no sugar, sweet fruits, vegetables, grains or cereals are allowed.

A typical weekly grapefruit diet menu is:

Monday

Breakfast  1 grapefruit or it’s juice, 1/2 cup of granola cereal woth dried fruit and nuts topped with 3 tablespoons of low fat yogurt.

Lunch  1 grapefruit, 1 bowl of clear soup, 2 slices wholewheat toast.

Dinner  7oz lean grilled chicken or turkey, salad, coffee or tea.

Snack  1 low fat yogurt.

 

Tuesday

Breakfast  1 cup fresh vegetable juice, 1 hardboiled egg, coffee or tea.

Lunch  1 grapefruit, 1 salad, 2 slices wholewheat toast.

Dinner  1 bowl vegetable bean soup, 2 slices of cheese.

Snack  1 grapefruit, ½ cup low fat cottage cheese.

 

Wednesday

Breakfast  1 grapefruit or it’s juice, 2 slices ham or cheese, 1 cup coffee or tea.

Lunch  1 grapefruit, salad, 1 cup of coffee or tea.

Dinner  4oz of meat, chicken or fish, salad, 1 cup tea with honey.

Snack  1 low fat yogurt.

 

Thursday

Breakfast  1 grapefruit or it’s juice, 2 hardboiled eggs, 1 cup tea or coffee.

Lunch  1 grapefruit, 1 cup low fat cottage cheese, 1 slice whole wheat bread, tea or coffee.

Dinner  7oz grilled fish, 1 cup steamed vegetables, tea or coffee.

Snack  1 granola bar.

 

Friday

Breakfast  Fruit salad containing grapefruit.

Lunch  1 large baked potato, salad, 1 cup of tea.

Dinner  7oz of grilled meat, chicken or fish with steamed vegetables, 1 cup low fat yogurt.

Snack  1 grapefruit or it’s juice.

 

Saturday and Sunday

Choose any menu from the previous days.

It is recommended to follow the grapefruit diet plan for only 7 days at a time.

Dieters report weight loss of up to 8 lbs in a week  on the Grapefruit diet menu.

This is rapid weight loss and whether it is sustainable long term is questionable.

The grapefruit diet is a low-carb diet. The theory is that grapefruit burns body fat when eaten with foods high in fat.
