Anna Thomas was born in Germany, to a Polish family and went to the USA as an infant immigrant. At college she taught herself to cook and gradually became a vegetarian evolving her own culinary flair.

Anna’s first cookbook, The Vegetarian Epicure emerged in 1972 while she was a graduate studying film at The University of California in Los Angeles. The book became a phenomenal success. It still remains a classic in vegetarian cooking. A few years later, Anna completed The Vegetarian Epicure: Book 2 published in 1978. Both books are been translated into several languages, have sold millions and remain continually in print.

While cooking and food writing, Anna continued her film studies and a film El Norte (DVD) was released in 1984 and became an instant critical and commercial success. Nominated for an Academy Award, the film collected numerous honours and in 1995 was elected to the National Film Archive at the Library of Congress.

Around 1995 Anna wrote another cookbook focusing on lighter vegetarian food recipes that were more sophisticated yet simple at the same time. In 1996 The New Vegetarian Epicure: Menus for Family and Friends was published, a menu cookbook collection of recipes.

Recently, Anna began a passionate relationship with soup, a passion that developed into a series of delicious new recipes contained in the book Love Soup: 160 All-new Recipes from the Author of “The Vegetarian Epicure” published in 2009.

Today Anna cooks in her spacious kitchen in Ojai, writes screenplays and teaches workshops in Los Angeles.
