  • Breakfast: a cup of coffee and add a grapefruit and piece of toast with peanut butter

  • Dinner: a cup of coffee, two hot dogs and steamed vegetables.
The portion size of each meal of these meals is small, and due to the low calorie consumption it is thought this is the real cause of the weight loss. 

The alternative and more restrictive version of the true coffee diet is simple. Drink five cups a day, as follows:

  • Cup 1: After breakfast
  • Cup 2: After lunch
  • Cup 3: Around 3 to 4 pm
  • Cup 4: After dinner
  • Cup 5: Around 9 pm
This version offers a nil calorie intake and is essentially a starvation diet resulting in obvious weight loss. Highly deficient in nutrients and not recommended however it does offer fast weight loss.

How much can you lose on the Coffee Diet?

Weight loss on a coffee diet is due to the low calorie intake rather than anything attributable to the coffee itself. Coffee on it’s own has negligible calories but if you add milk, sugar or syrups the calories consumed will add up. To benefit from the coffee diet you need to drink it black with nothing added. Given the coffee diet plan is low calorie resulting in weight loss, the caffeine in the coffee does help get you through the restrictive calorie intake by boosting metabolism and energy levels though this can leave you tired and irritable.

Over a three day period on the coffee diet with noting else consumed you can lose around 6 pounds but this is weight easily put back on when you revert to usual eating habits. Also how much of this weight loss is down to fluid loss rather than proper weight loss is debatable.

They theory behind the coffee diet is based on the effect of caffeine on the metabolism and the low calories consumed. The coffee can increase the body’s metabolic rate by up to 10% allowing you to burn hundreds more calories a day.

The 3 day version of the diet with food involves having limited portions of the low calorie foods. Though the foods are healthy to eat in moderation, eating them each day in low calorie portions could over the long term be unhealthy and unsafe. To analyse the calories consumed, with the breakfast of black coffee, half a grapefruit and a piece of toast with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter the meal contains 168 calories with 8 g of fat. The lunch contains around only 167 calories and 1.5 g fat. Dinner contains around 168 calories. Total of around 500 calories a day which on any diet will lead to weight loss.
If you are eating less calories than you burn through exercise and physical activity, you will always lose weight. Drinking black coffee helps to suppress the appetite making it easier to stick to the diet even though you’re not eating sufficient calories.
However there is a question mark over how effective the weight loss will be. If you usually consume 2,000 calories a day and suddenly start having only 500 calories a day, your body may fall into starvation mode and release water to retain the fat and muscle in the body. When you come off the coffee diet and start eating normally again, your body will replenish its water levels and the weight comes back .
