Low Protein DietLow Protein Diet Plan

A low protein diet is a diet where you reduce intake of protein. Followers of a low protein diet menu will find themselves eating mainly carbohydrates and limiting intakes of meat, fish and animal products.

A diet low in protein is difficult to follow given the restricted menu choices and is only usually followed by those prescribed such a diet plan for medical reasons.

A low-protein diet may be prescribed to people with kidney or liver disease or inherited metabolic disorders.

Low Protein Diet Meals

Foods to avoid on a low protein diet are animal products such as meat, eggs, fish, poultry, milk, yoghurt, cheese, peanut butter and nuts. Foods low in protein are vegetables, fruits, bread, cakes, pasta, corn and potatoes. People on a low-protein diet may also be given a protein substitute mixture or minerals and vitamin tablet.

How much weight can I lose on a Low Protein Diet?

About 2 to 3 lbs per week.

A low protein diet is usually followed as a medical requirement rather than in a attempt to lose weight.

How does a Low Protein Diet work?

A  low protein diet promotes a high fat intake, which supposedly reduces hunger so you eat less calories. It is similar to the Atkins diet with a low protein intake rather than a low carb intake. Followers of this diet are encouraged to eat carbs which are high in fat and eliminate protein. However the high fat low protein diet is scientifically unproven and potentially unsafe.

On a high fat and low protein diet, your body has plenty of carbs and so has no reason to burn off the high fat intake. The carbohydrate will be used for energy and excess fat stored! Although fat calories may lessen hunger pangs this is also achieved through eating protein and this is also a healthier alternative.  The only way a low protein diet could help you lose weight would be if you exercise to eliminate surplus calories but the problem with this is that exercise requires sufficient protein to order  repair muscle damage and build further muscle. A low protein diet lacking in protein will not help you here and may cause damage to your body and health.
